KID REPORTERS’ NOTEBOOK
Hillary Clinton Campaigns in Illinois
On March 10, Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton spoke to a crowd of approximately 800 people in Vernon Hills, Illinois, a suburb of Chicago. Clinton said that she was happy to be back in her hometown of Chicago and used the rally as an opportunity to share her ideas on a range of issues.
The turnout was so large that the venue, the Sullivan Community Center and Family Aquatic Center, reached maximum occupancy despite just 24 hours notice for the attendees. “The turnout, I think, shows you all know what’s at stake,” Clinton said.
The former Secretary of State talked about issues such as education, the economy, equal pay for woman, climate change, and health care. “I’ll stand my ground on my values,” she added, calling herself "a progressive who likes to get things done."
AFTER THE RALLY
After Clinton spoke, many attendees stayed behind in hopes of shaking the candidate's hand or getting a selfie with her. A few supporters received books written by the former Secretary of State. Many staff members, including Clinton aide Huma Abedin, talked to supporters after the rally.
The rally was mostly filled with Clinton supporters. But one person held up a sign as attendees left, urging them to vote in Tuesday's primary election for Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders, Clinton's chief rival for the Democratic nomination.
